Bad Thing : Ordered boots from Piperlime because my other old winter boots are full of holes and the grip has vanished  =  wet feet and falling all over this city. BUT DHL has had them stuck at customs for the last 4 days. They’re just chilling in the airport in Tokyo, while I’m here freezing my socks off. (ALSO, this my first time ordering boots online and it’s scary. I’ve never bought American sizes so I hope they fit me. This is definitely a #firstworldproblem and I should be ashamed.) What do you think customs officials do while they work in DHL purgatory? I like to think of them opening all the boxes of woman’s clothing and footwear and having an impromptu drag show.

Good Thing : I am off to Tokyo this weekend for a speech contest. Flying in Saturday, flying out Sunday. (I know I’ve promised a million people to come visit them, but this is not that time, so please don’t hold against me that I won’t see you!) I love traveling on the school’s dime. Also, I can probably go pick up my boots MYSELF while I’m in the airport.

Bad Thing : Rhino poachers have already killed 11 in the Kruger Park so far this year (448 found dead in 2011). Reports say that the poachers are coming into the park from Mozambique and that they are selling the horns to Chinese companies who make ancient Asian medicine. Read this National Geographic article All Myth,No Medicine  (click for link) in which it shows studies that rhino horns have absolutely no medical value AT ALL. ‘Rhino horn ‘is of no use to anyone except the original owner’.

Good Thing : Two poachers killed in a shoot out with rangers in the Kruger Park. Yes, one is not supposed to find the news of dead people comforting, but in certain cases, it most definitely is.
