Good Peoples
Have any other expats out there ever experienced what I have dubbed the, ‘My Peoples Are GREAT’ phenomenon ?
Before I moved to Japan, I had always thought that since Australia, New Zealand and South Africa were all similar in theory (the most important points being : ex-British colonies, rugby, cricket and Christmas in Summer), that Australians, Kiwis and SAfricans would all, individual differences aside, be similar kinds of people.
Ha, assumption = incorrect. Man, South Africans are DIFFERENT. I can’t quite put my finger on what it is, but it’s something solid, something that makes me feel like I am in quality company, with people who are good.
Just spending time with Joey (and her honorary-South-African husband Tak) made me feel a little less lonely. There are nice people in Japan, there are! Just… the majority of them aren’t in Sapporo (or… maybe I haven’t met you yet?) or you all MOVE AWAY #guilt trip.
I have always said that the one thing that determines how much I love my life in Japan, is how much I miss my peeps from back home. On the days where an email to my best friend suffices, and my mood is perky from a single postcard in the post box : I LOVE JAPAN! WAHOO!
And the days where I need someone (Shakti, Thomas, Vanessa, Cathy, Sarah # 1, Helen, Welby, Luke) to just pop in unexpectedly and give me a hug : … MAN, those are the days where Im ready to throw in the towel, call it a day and buy a one way ticket on a boat to Africa. Its nothing personal, Japan. But, My Peoples? They’re Good Peoples. x
